American Military Operation on Caracas Fuels Anxieties of Potential Danish Territory Annexation.

The recent US-led military action in the South American nation and the detention of its president have renewed unease regarding America's ambitions on the Arctic territory. Followers of the ex-president's political movement have allegedly turned their attention to the resource-rich island in the wake of the events in the southern hemisphere.

Inflammatory Posts and Diplomatic Backlash

Merely hours after the commencement of the Venezuelan campaign, a prominent right-wing commentator, who is married to a high-ranking White House aide, shared a symbolic map. The picture showed Greenland draped with the American flag, with the single-word message: "COMING."

This overt threat to claim the mineral-rich region, which is a part of the NATO alliance, provoked immediate and firm condemnation from Danish officials.

"We are close allies and should continue to work together as such. US security is also Greenland’s and our security," stated the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "Our nation and the US work together to ensure security in the North."

The ambassador additionally pointed out that the kingdom had significantly boosted its defence spending this year, earmarking a large sum expressly for Northern and North Atlantic security. "Furthermore, we demand full respect for the sovereign borders of the our realm," he emphasized.

Administrative Moves and Geopolitical Goals

The tensions were additionally exacerbated by the recent naming of a Southern governor as a representative to Greenland. The governor had publicly thanked the president, saying it was an "privilege" to work in a unpaid role to "bring Greenland into the US."

After the military action in Venezuela, this envoy praised the administration's actions, connecting it to the broader "fight against narcotics."

Since returning to office, the American leader has consistently alarmed transatlantic allies with his expressed interest in Greenland. The territory is viewed as critically strategic for national security and potential mineral exploitation. It currently hosts the most northerly US air base.

Refusing to Rule Out Military Action

In a significant media interview, the president refused to exclude the resorting to armed action to acquire Greenland. This position comes during growing great-power rivalry in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He characterized Greenland as having a "very small amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll value them... But we need that for international security."

Growing Friction and Indigenous Opposition

In reaction to this persistent "rhetoric" of intent, Danish intelligence service took the unprecedented step last month of classifying the United States as a "security risk."

The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland issued a joint and stern statement: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not take over other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland reveals a nuanced picture. While a vast majority of the island's inhabitants seek self-rule from Denmark, there is also little to no appetite to become part of the United States. The territory has had the legal right to seek independence for over a decade.

Expert View: A Credible Threat?

Military analysts are increasingly reconsidering the likelihood of such a action. One thinktank director specializing in defence conceded she had once discounted the rhetoric but was "currently not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to deploy a few hundred or a couple thousand troops inside of Greenland, and it's unclear to me who could intervene about it," she concluded.
