The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
