Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments should be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
