Our Leading Album of 2025: The Artist's Lux Claims the Top Spot.

On the surface, this work might appear closer to an arduous academic quiz rather than the latest popular music project from a musician whose previous hit featured an international pop icon. Divided across 4 different sections and sung in thirteen languages, this is a dizzying symphonic work exploring female mystique, religious transcendence, and physical change, frequently by way of the prism of various women saints. The end of a love affair—a theme treated with raw honesty elsewhere—soars skyward here, buoyed by the constant presence of a full symphony orchestra and work from an award-winning composer among a vast roll call of collaborators. The pure daring by itself renders the work of other pop stars look rather laughable.

Transcending Academic Pretense

That this album succeeds in avoid dry intellectual chin-stroking is nearly miraculous, with complete credit going to the artist. While it's not her first album to alchemize the past with the present, the stakes feel far higher here, and the tightrope walk more dramatic. The element that really elevates her fourth album, outside of its complex tunes, dense compositions, and inherent theatricality, is a core spirit of playfulness. Much like the iconic artist during her height, there is a wondrous quality to Rosalía's voice which sweeps you up in its tornado. Even when she is tearing hearts apart, you still want to be right there through the ride.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

That exuberant energy comes forth clearly on the stunning piano-led ballad inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four minutes. Suddenly, all the music falls silent, to reveal we hear a gleeful giggle followed by a declaration prior to a hilariously over-the-top orchestral surge thuds in like comedic impact. The track then shifts into the frenetic single driven by galloping strings, a powerful choral group, and a surprise role from the artist herself.

"The charm of Lux is that you never quite understand—or even want to know—what it will go to next."

Nearly every track ends in a completely distinct point than how it started. A track examines the transient nature of celebrity with a featherlight symphony before collapsing in digital chaos. Elsewhere, a cut echoing her earlier trap-infused style begins out dark and sinister, with menacing vocals, until fluttering traditional rhythms and a heavenly chorus enter to soften its rough edges.

The Balance Between Art and Pop

A key achievement of the album involves straddling the line of bold experimentation and broad appeal. It is little coincidence that it has become her first release to crack the upper reaches of major charts: its heart contains a collection of truly undeniable pop songs. One track sung entirely in English swells on a chorus that feels to gather increasingly nagging melodies as it spins skyward. This trick is echoed on a different powerful track that grows and constricts, weaving layered melodies as a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused number seduces via its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it shares the cultural impact of other breakup songs, eviscerating an ex- partner labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout the album, the singing have a sharp smile, like a storybook character concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

Lux is popular music on a grand scale, a hungry grasp for high artistry amid of looming AI-generated sameness. It eschews solipsism in favor of glorious elevation, crafting a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its own inherent excess. This is an abundant source of hidden gems that requires patience to fully mine but never seem like a chore. While other major releases of the year seemed like a meager meal, this record offers a lavish feast at which the guests around the table, perhaps tipsy on sacred wine, flutter from discussions about historical saints, the profound sensation of soul-shattering grief, and common stories about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from pop's most endlessly inventive practitioner.
