Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and residences being swept away by strong flows.

Our team saved fourteen people stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers have found that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events result in approximately millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
