Seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left group stand trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
